Test preparation and coaching, such as the services that Kaplan and Princeton Review provide, can raise student test scores by 30%. However, those families who need it most, as the article below indicates, are often excluded from this type of service since they can’t afford it.
Certainly, all students should have equal access to test preparation. which can be offered to all students in an after school program for those with the initiative to stay and attend. Practice alone can raise scores with a book and some determination. All students can have this access and should have this access, especially those who are from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Let’s not forget that one of the most important aspects of being an effective learner is not simply improving scores on a test, it is actually learning conceptually as well as memorizing concepts. If students can learn these critical thinking skills, they will get into college, do well once they are there and seek the experiences outside of college which will make them world-ready.
